About the Squad

image oneWelcome to GBA18.com, home of FFG, “The Fighting Frogs!” We are the newest French Air Force (FAF) squad to form within the World War 2 Online community, commanded by Sideout, a member of the Allied High Command, and XO’d by Creeden. We are proud of the fact that we have some of the best bombing pilots in the Allied air forces in our ranks, and we hope you’ll consider us if you are looking to join a squad. FFG awards squad ribbons for the Top 3 pilots each campaign who have the greatest RTB (return to base) percentage, and to pilots who finish both in the Top 100 categories, and especially, the Top 10. Awards are also given to the Top 3 pilots for most enemy truck kills, most enemy flak guns destroyed, most boats sunk, and of course, most enemy armor destroyed.

Historically, the War was over rather quickly for the French and many of the surviving aircraft were flown either to Britain or Africa, with the hopes of having the opportunity to fight again. You might be surprised to know that the FAF did rather well in the short weeks they were engaged against Hermann Goering’s vaunted Luftwaffe.

The fighter units on the northeastern front were equipped exclusively with machines built within the preceding eighteen months. The American-made Curtiss 75A fighter (the H75 in-game) joined French squadrons beginning in March 1939. It was the most effective type in its class in combat over France until the Dewoitine D520 became operational in mid-May 1940. Eight squadrons equipped with the Curtiss 75A shot down 220 German aircraft (confirmed kills), losing only thirty-three pilots. In seven aerial battles in which the Curtiss fighters were engaged with Messerschmitts, the total score was twenty-seven Bf 109Es and six Bf 110Cs destroyed for three of the French aircraft. The first two squadrons equipped with the fast and agile Dewoitine 520 entered the battle on 13 May; eight others completed conversion training and became operational before the armistice. Between them, they shot down 175 enemy aircraft for a loss of 44 aviators.

So, for those of you who like to fly fighters, the H75 and D520 did fairly well! FFG is primarily a CAS squad, meaning Close Air Support and therefore close to the ground! Our aim is to support the boots and treads on the ground, and we do it exceedingly well! We don’t have many of the same rules that other squads have, other than we try to fly together, we try to have fun, and we try to rain destruction down on Axis forces. Background

The Fighting Frogs were formed by two friends, Sideout and SirSnipy, with the purpose of trying to make a difference for French Air Forces. Sideout is both the Commanding Officer of the Fighting Frogs, and XO of Bombing Group 6, an official FAF Bombing group within WW2Online, and a member of the Allied High Command. Sideout has played WW2Online for a little over 5 years, and has been a previous member of Sturmgrenadier on the Axis side, and Bravo Two Zero on the Allied side. Sideout recently transferred from Squadron Commander, 61 Squadron, Royal Air Force, to French Air Forces, and was given command of GBA 18 at the start of Campaign 34. Creeden is the XO for the Fighting Frogs and is one of the most experienced pilots in the game, whether he flies a fighter(his preference!) or honors us in his DB7.
What has made the game most enjoyable for these players is something they wish to pass on to the squad. Teamwork, organization, and enjoying bringing destruction to all things grey!

Historical Quote of the Month

"France has lost a battle. But France has not lost the war. A makeshift government may have capitulated, giving way to panic, forgetting honour, delivering their country into slavery. Yet nothing is lost! Nothing is lost because this war is a world war. In the free universe, immense forces have not yet been brought into play. Some day these forces will crush the enemy. On that day France must be present at the victory. She will then regain her liberty an her greatness. That is why I ask all Frenchmen, wherever they may be, to unite with me in action, in sacrifice and in hope. Our country is in danger of death. Let us fight to save it."
- General Charles de Gaulle, Leader of the Free French Forces (1940)

Squad Mission Statement

GBA18, AKA the "Fighting Frogs", assumes that the number 1 mission of a squad is to enhance the overall game play of a WWIIONLINE subscriber by increasing communication and coordination, identifying a common objective, boost camaraderie, and generally open up new avenues of gaming intensity.
